Claire’s brother lived in Bolivia during 1939 and was the person responsible for arranging visas for Wolfgang and his family; thus saving their lives. Claire was an actress, but was forced to abandon her career due to Hitler’s anti-Semitic policies forbidding Jews to perform on stage. She married and moved to Switzerland. Subsequently, she suffered from what was then called “Artist Melancholy” – known as bipolar disorder today. Claire died in an institution in 1974. The artist found this picture among family papers and was captivated by the haunting eyes. |
