By 1939, the Jakobsbergs had escaped Nazi Germany to Bolivia. Gerda anxiously awaited news of her sister Ilse and husband Robert’s departure from Berlin. The letters she received from them over the next year and a half would contain very little information, only vague references to lack of money, food and subtle reassurances that they were fine. In 1941, this last letter arrived. Gerda’s next several letters to her sister were returned, stamped “no known address.” Ilse and Robert perished during the Holocaust. |
