In 1938, the Nazis marched through the village of Bahn, Germany and ordered Jewish families to abandon their homes. Wolfgang’s parents packed three steamer trunks and a small suitcase, went to Berlin, and waited for visas from Bolivia. In June of 1939, a steamer ship operated by a German Captain took the family on board with the three trunks as well as other passengers. All possessions were put in the hold except for bare necessities for the long horrendous journey. While at sea, Germany invaded Poland and the Captain panicked, forcing all passengers to disembark at the nearest port in South America without their belongings. The freighter continued on and was not heard from again. It was not until 1945, after the war, that a notice arrived from the train station in La Paz, Bolivia. In their haste to leave Germany, the family forgot that one steamer trunk was sent by train. Imagine the emotions discovering Lost Memorabilia that was thought to have been gone forever.
