A Stolperstein – meaning “stumbling block” – is a monument created by Gunter Demnig which commemorates a victim of the Holocaust. Stolpersteins are small cobblestone-sized memorials for victims of Nazism. They commemorate individuals of all races and religions who were consigned by the Nazis to prisons, euthanasia facilities, sterilization clinics, concentration camps, and extermination camps, as well as those who responded to persecution by emigrating or committing suicide.
The artist’s family was invited to Berlin for a dedication on December 2, 2013. Two stolpersteins were placed in front of the former residence of Ilse and Robert Abraham who were forced to leave by the Nazis. Above is the artist’s rendition of the victims and their memorial stones with inscriptions.
