Then came a day when the sky went dark, only muffled sounds and the cold. Unable to frequent public life, families and friends congregated in the confines of their homes and told stories especially to the children to distract them from their anxiety.
As a young woman your Mom and I plucked chickens on a farm in Stettin that was run by the sisters of a convent. I was better at catching the chickens, because I ran fast, your mom was daintier. Your grandmother Lizzie sang beautifully and loved acting. We would all dress up in theatrical clothes, act out roles and take pictures which I can show you. When we were not in school the three of us rode bikes around the countryside. Your grandfather was much more conservative and having to live with three active women was not easy. Conversation was never lacking, especially in the kitchen where wonderful German dishes were prepared; like butter cookies and roulade. We all learned French, Italian and some English at school, but naturally everyone spoke German, our native language and life felt good. |
